Brewing and Disc Golf with Simon Lizotte and Aaron Wilmot
Collaboration comes from all corners of our world, and given that we have a number of avid disc golfers on staff it’s almost surprising that our first disc golf collab took 5 and a half years to come about. For those familiar with the sport, Simon Lizotte is certainly a name that rings a bell. From his world record throwing distance, to his colorful and prolific vlogging skill, to his 3rd place finish at the 2017 PDGA World Championship, Simon has made his mark on the world of disc golf. Simon’s also a huge beer fan, seeking out the best breweries and beers he can find while traveling to tournaments and spending time at home in Central Massachusetts.
Anyone who has been following our recent merch drops will be familiar with the work of local creative masterminds, Thought Space Athletics. Custom Mast Landing printed discs have been a hot item each time we release them, and it was through our work with Aaron that we got connected to Simon.
Learning about our overlapping interests in disc golf and beer was the jumping off point for a Mast Landing/Thought Space/Simon Lizotte collaboration beer. With the knowledge that lots of folks from our community love disc golf and all things outdoors, we got to work planning a beer, a merch drop, and a fun release event at our Freeport tasting room. Like many of our favorite collaborations the creative energy was strong, and a few short weeks after starting to chat, we were getting ready to welcome these two beer lovers from the disc golf world for a brew day.
On a sunny, crisp day in late November Weston and Eric from our brewing team showed Simon and Aaron how the beer gets made, while putting them to work graining out, adding hops to the whirlpool, and entertaining the production staff with a few brew deck trick shots. The beer we collaborated on is a juicy, hazy New England style double IPA called Cloud Pleaser - featuring El Dorado, Mosaic, Belma, and Citra Cryo hops. After we got the collab into the tank, we headed down to Scarborough for lunch and a round of disc golf at Pleasant Hill. Simon captured the whole day for his YouTube channel - check it out!
As Simon mentions in his video, December 18th will be the release day for this exciting new beer. He and Aaron will be joining us in Freeport with some special merchandise to celebrate the release. We’re already stoked about the response that we’ve gotten from fans of beer, disc sports, and community! The experience of working with these two creators has been exhilarating - it reminds us that there’s so much to learn and share with like-minded folks, whether they’re experienced brewers or experts in adjacent fields. Next step, learn the secret to throwing a drive like Simon.
