Tap List to Tee Box: A Year of Disc Golf at Mast Landing

If you’ve been keeping an eye on Mast Landing over the past year, you’ve probably noticed our affinity for disc golf taking the stage both in our events and our limited release beers. What initially began as a desire to bring a shared interest from our staff to the public has become a constant source of inspiration and excitement thanks to all the engagement we’ve received from our incredible supporters.

As many of you know, the cultures and communities of disc golf & craft beer are a natural fit. Creative, fun-loving, and communal folks tend to gravitate towards both ventures, and it’s no surprise that many people dabble in both as a hobby. We’d be hitting the course ourselves regardless, but finding a way to include our work at Mast Landing in the process has been rewarding beyond belief. Not only has it given us a chance to meet even more of the people that enjoy our beers, but it’s also helped connect us to new, like-minded individuals.

It was late 2021 when we at Mast Landing got connected with Simon Lizotte - pro disc golfer, YouTube phenom, and all around great guy. The connection was facilitated by the crew from Thought Space Athletics, and before long we were all working on a three-way collaboration beer & disc release. Cloud Pleaser was our first foray into a themed beer in the disc golf space, and the response was HUGE. Seeing so many enthusiasts lined up outside of our Freeport tasting room waiting to meet Simon and try the beer we worked on together was proof that the effort to combine two worlds was well worth it.

In the time since we launched Cloud Pleaser last December, we’ve had the chance to build a number of collaborations into our brewing schedule. In early 2022 we revisited the Cloud Pleaser recipe - upping it to the strength of a double IPA and reimagining the concept to bring forth Crush Juice, the second Mast Landing + Simon Lizotte + Thought Space collaboration.

Over the course of the summer of 2022 we embarked on a new journey all its own - the S P A C E / S H I P S series. This series of three beers was dreamt up in tandem with the Thought Space Athletics team. This time the goal was focused on building a fantastical narrative and story to lead into the Maine State Disc Golf Championships in late August. The three beers - Argo Navis, Planetary Plunder, and Solar Winds - ran the gamut of styles, giving disc golf fans of all preferences a way to enjoy the series.

Along with our disc golf focused collaboration beer releases, Mast Landing has been lucky enough to participate in local events, sharing our beers right on the course where the real magic happens. First up was the Maine State Disc Golf Championships, where we got the opportunity to run the beer garden while Pros and Amateurs alike competed at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. Prior to the event, our Freeport tasting room had the pleasure of hosting the player party in conjunction with the release of Solar Winds and a run of Solar Winds printed discs from Thought Space Athletics.

Later on in the Summer of 2022 Mast Landing helped to run the 6th Annual Maine Brewers Doubles tournament. Folks from our local beer, cider, food, and beverage industries partnered up with their most talented friends for a casual tournament that benefited Uplay Disc Golf, once again hosted at Pineland Farms. Our pals from Thought Space Athletics were once again in on the effort here, playing co-host and creating some awesome discs for the occasion.

Throughout the beer release events, rounds on the course, disc collaborations, and tournaments, it’s always been clear how much fun it is to bring disc golf and great beer together. Through showcasing our passion for plastic, hopefully Mast Landing has introduced some of our loyal drinkers to a great new sport. On the flip side, we’ve been honored to hear that our involvement in the world of disc golf has created lifelong fans of what we’re creating at brewery. With the warm weather starting to wind down here in Maine, we’re heading back to the planning board to think up what we can do next to keep building relationships between two of our favorite communities.
